Michelle AtkinsonRead about Michelle - Race Team Mechanic NameMichelle Atkinson QualificationsNVQ Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repairs 1. When did you first become interested in the Motorsport Industry and why?I’ve watched F1 since I was small – I always used to enjoy watching the crashes especially. Lauder College were aware of my interest, and so approached me to ask if I would like to do my apprenticeship here at Knockhill – I jumped at the chance! 2. Current job title/company?I am a Race Team Mechanic for Legends racing at Knockhill. 3. What does your current job involve? This involves general servicing of the vehicles, repairing any damage, prepping the cars for racing. I also do some instruction and demonstration at corporate days – I really enjoy the change and it’s good to be in contact with the public. 4. What steps did you take to get into your current role?I went to Lauder College in Dunfermline when I was 20, to study for an NVQ in Light Vehicle Maintenance and repairs. The college then approached me to ask if I would be interested in completing the qualification with Knockhill. The apprenticeship consisted of one day a week at college and then the rest of the time was spent working at Knockhill. I had to complete a portfolio to submit to the assessors but in general there wasn’t too much paperwork – which is good because I really dislike paper work! We also had exams every six months when I had to put in a lot more extra time for revision. What helped was that I had a very supportive boss! 5. Details of any major obstacles faced and how these were overcome? The main obstacle that I faced was being female in a male dominated industry, although this has been less of a problem in my current role. In order to gain credibility and respect I think that I’ve had to work harder than I would have had I been male. 6. What do you like best about your job? What I love about my job is the constant buzz. There’s plenty of variety and scope for development in my role and it certainly keeps me fit! I really enjoy helping out at corporate days as it’s nice to meet members of the public. 7. Are there any disadvantages? The main disadvantages to the job are long hours, a lot of hard work and during the season, working weekends. It’s certainly not as glamorous as most people think it is! 8. Do you have any additional involvement with Motorsport?I got my race licence in 2002 and although I didn’t have the opportunity to race I’ve kept it up-to-date. Since finishing my apprenticeship I’ve raced twice and also participated in Formula Woman. 9. What are your plans for the future?I love working at Knockhill and feel very attached to the organisation as a whole. I want to carry on working to promote Legends Racing and Knockhill because of this. 10. Advice you would give to youngsters trying to get into Motorsport?Be keen – it will get you noticed!
